Patrick Proposes Borrowing $3 Billion for Deficient Bridges
(wfcr) - Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick Tuesday unveiled a bill to borrow nearly $3 billion to speed repairs for 250 to 300 bridges that are designated as structurally deficient. The bill is a scaled-down version of a plan released by Patrick last month that would have accelerated repairs to more than 400 bridges at a cost of $3.8 billion. The governor cited fiscal concerns for cutting his plan. He said the bill will save the state an estimated $1.5 billion in avoided inflation and deferred maintenance costs.

The Governor says those "good jobs" will include thousands in engineering and construction work. The list of bridges include one on 1-91 in Chicopee over the Connecticut river, several bridges in Springfield, and one each in the rural towns of Chester and Hawley. House Speaker Sal Dimasi and Senate President Therese Murray are backing the 8 year plan.
