Holyoke Principal Retires After 35 Years of Service
Tracy Kidder's 1989 book "Among Schoolchildren" chronicled a year in Zajac's fifth grade classroom.
(wfcr) - A renowned school principal in Holyoke, Massachusetts is retiring after 35 years of service to the city. Christine Zajac, who was a teacher and vice-principal before becoming the head of the Sullivan Elementary school, will step down next month. Zajac is well known beyond the city because of her role in author Tracy Kidder's 1989 book "Among Schoolchildren." It chronicled a year in her fifth grade classroom. Zajac says though much has changed in the 3 decades she spent in Holyoke, she still offers the same advice to young teachers and administrators.

Zajac says she is confident the Sullivan school will continue to thrive in her absence, calling the school's teachers the most competent group she has worked with over the course of her career.
