Springfield, MA Police Recruiting New Officers
(wfcr) - Springfield, Massachusetts will be holding another civil service exam next month in an effort to recruit more police officers. The supplemental exam is being held for those who were unable to take last May's exam, such as military personnel returning from Iraq or Afghanistan, and college seniors whose graduation exercises conflicted with the exam schedule. The department is also trying to become more diverse by recruiting more African-American, Latino and Asian officers. Charles Youmans, the department's community outreach advocate, says his main job will be convincing those men and women to join a force that has had often-strained relationships with communities of color.

The civil service exam is slated for June 28th. Commissioner William Fitchet says as part of the recruitment effort, his department is starting a police Academy in mid-June and is looking to hire between 28 and 32 additional officers this year.
