UMass Pres. Proposes Revoking Mugabe's Honorary Degree
(2008-05-13)
Umass President Jack Wilson proposes revoking an honorary degree given to Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe(pictured right).
(wfcr) - University of Massachusetts President Jack Wilson says he will recommend to trustees that the school revoke an honorary degree awarded to Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe, something the university has never done before. Mugabe received an honorary doctorate of law from U-Mass Amherst in 1986, when he was hailed for ending minority rule and establishing an independent Zimbabwe. But Robert Connolly, a spokesman for Wilson, says Mugabe has since been condemned for stifling political opposition, ruining the economy and committing human rights abuses.

Wilson's announcement comes following a similar call by state Representative Kevin Murphy, who says continuing to Honor Mugabe runs contrary to the values the university stands for. Connolly says Wilson will ask U-Mass trustees at its June 12th meeting to rescind the degree.
