1972 Unsolved Murder Sees New Evidence
(wfcr) - The parents of a 13-year-old altar boy from Springfield, Massachusetts whose murder in 1972 remains unsolved say they hope the release of thousands of pages of investigative documents could finally bring their son's killer to justice. Carl and Bernice Croteau Monday called for a new investigation into the death of their son, Danny, in light of a judge's order to release files that allege the then District Attorney Matthew Ryan and Springfield Bishop Christopher Weldon colluded on a cover-up. John Stobierski, the family's attorney, says they are extremely disappointed that the details released in judge John Agostini's opinion were kept from them by the district attorney's office.

The family's former parish priest, Richard Lavigne has long been considered a prime suspect in Croteau's death by investigators, but he has denied any involvement and has never been charged. Lavigne has since been sued for abusing dozens of former parishioners. The Springfield diocese has denied charges of a cover-up.
