Half of "First Night" Proceeds to Benefit Pleasant Street Theater
(wfcr) - Northampton Center for the Arts will donate half the proceeds from this year's "First Night" celebration to keep the Pleasant Street Theater open. The announcement comes as a community fundraising effort has raised almost $50-thousand to support a plan to keep the independent movie theater open under the management of the Amherst Cinema. Center for the Arts Director Penny Burke says her organization hopes to raise between $10 and 25,000 for the theater, depending on the weather and the size of the New Year's Eve crowd.

Burke says she expects the center's donations will bring the fundraising total close to the $100,000 mark. That's what the Amherst cinema says it needs to take over operation of Pleasant Street. The Amherst Cinema has negotiated a lease agreement with Joseph Blumenthal, who recently purchased the building that houses the Pleasant Street Theater.
