UMass Trustees Elect New Chairman
(2007-12-17)
(wfcr) - The UMass Board of Trustees has elected a new Chairman. Robert Manning, a businessman from Swampscott, will replace outgoing Chairman Stephen Tocco. The move comes after a contentious political battle that involved Governor Deval Patrick rallying votes on the board to make the change. Both Manning and Tocco are Republicans and Romney appointees to the Board of Trustees, but Manning says he does not see himself as having allegiance to any particular Governor.

Manning says his first priorities will be pushing through a bond bill to build up the infrastructure of the UMass-Amherst campus, and increasing alumni donations to beef up the University's endowment, which remains lower than many other state schools nationwide.
