College Students Maybe Drinking Less
(2007-12-10)
(wfcr) - UMass Amherst officials and local community leaders Friday celebrated what they say is a sucessful campaign against dangerous drinking. A recent survey found a 25% reduction in heavy drinking on the Amherst campus. Martha Nelson Patrick is the University's director of community relations. She's also part of a group that's been distributing information around the campus about the risks of drinking too much alcohol. She says students often perceive that their peers are drinking more than they actually are.

The survey also found a 14% decrease in heavy drinking among students under the legal drinking age. The survey, administered by Boston University's school of health, was given to only 616 of UMass Amherst's more than 25,000 students.
