Life Science Initiative Would Provide UMass $100 Million
(wfcr) - A top Patrick administration official says the the Governor's life science initiative would provide as much as $100 million to the UMass system, in research grants and other projects. Dan O'Connell, the secretary of housing and economic development, was at the UMass Amherst yesterday, meeting with campus officials, local politicians and business leaders. O'Connell says he expects the bill to be passed very quickly, and for funds to be available by the end of this year.

O'connell, the Govenor, and others will testify about the initiative on Beacon Hill today, in front of the legislature's joint committee on emerging technologies today. North Adams Representative Daniel Bosley, who co-chairs the committee, says the bill still needs much work. And both Senate President Therese Murray and House Speaker Sal Dimasi have asked if the measure should be expanded to give other industries, such as manufacturing and software development, access to the funding.
