Springfield Ends Free Trash Pick Up
(2007-08-15)
(wfcr) - Springfield, Massachusetts residents who have not paid the city's new trash collection fee will be getting yellow stickers on their trash bins this week. The stickers notify residents that the city will no longer collect their trash. Residents who do not pay the fee within two weeks will have their trash barrels confiscated and they will be required to dispose of their own trash. Azell Murphy Cavaan, the city's director of community relations, says only certain groups qualify for reduced fees.

The city previously picked up trash for free -- but last year, the control board overseeing the city's finances instituted a trash fee to raise an estimated four million dollars in revenue. In response to a lawsuit by residents, a judge ordered the city to make it clear to residents that they have a choice whether to pay the city to pick up their garbage, or to make alternate arrangements.
