UMASS Amherst Could Play a Role in Possible Gaming Expansion
(2007-08-01)
(wfcr) - Following approval by residents of Middleborough, Massachusetts this weekend to host a Indian-run casino, UMASS Amherst officials say the school is well positioned to play a role in the possible expansion of gaming in the state. The university has been offering a series of courses since 2003 focusing on the gaming industry, ranging from casino management and products to gaming and social policy. Rod Warnick heads the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management at UMASS. He says the courses were originally developed with the Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun casinos, anticipating a need for managers in an industry that has spread to 28 states across the country.

Warnick says those jobs include areas beyond the casino floor, such as event planning, food services, and lodging. State lawmakers must still give final approval to build a casino in Middleborough.
