Anonymous Donation Funds ESL Program
(wfcr) - The Jones Library in Amherst, Massachusetts is able to continue its English as a Second Language program this summer, thanks to an anonymous donation of more than $4,000. Cuts in Amherst's budget caused the town's library system to cut some programs and hours of operation. Before the donation, the Jones ESL program was budgeted to run from only September 2007 to May 2008. Beth Girshman, Adult Services librarian at the Jones library, says people need ESL services year round.

The operating cost of the ESL program is relatively low. The coordinator's salary is $28,000 a year. Materials cost about $3,000. Other town library services have also been impacted by budget cuts. The North Amherst library and Munson Memorial have had to cut their afternoon hours. The library has initiated a campaign to raise money, to restore their services. It begins with a benefit concert at Amherst college in October.
