Greenfield USDA Office May Close; Some Farmers Concerned about Loss of Services
(2007-07-24)
(wfcr) - The USDA office in Greenfield, Massachusetts, may be consolidating with the office in Hadley as soon as May 2008, according to federal officials. That would mean Franklin County farmers from as far away as Buckland and Colrain would have to travel to Hadley in order to meet with consultants. But Franklin County Farm Bureau President Chuck Patenaude says the long commute would not be the biggest problem. He worries that the Hadley would not be be able to support the needs of farmers from other regions.

Patenaude says he's concerned that if the USDA office were to leave Greenfield, it wouldn't be long before other services left the area as well. But Sandra Adams, State Director of the USDA's Farm Service Agency, tells WFCR there won't be any loss of staff or services as a result of thec consolidation. She says the move is an effort to better serve area farmers with the limited resources the agency has to offer.
