Teens Make Rounds of Compliance Checks to Cigarette Vendors
(2007-06-12)
(wfcr) - A West Springfield social service agency hopes to lower the sales of tobacco to underage youth with the help of a $70- thousand grant from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. The Gandara Center is hiring high school students this summer to carry out compliance checks at stores that sell cigarettes in greater springfield including in Agawam, Chicopee, and Westfield . The center's michael pease says this is the second round of compliance checks.

According to the state Department of Public Health, towns with local health boards that receive anti tobacco funding from the state have fewer illegal tobacco sales, than those that don't. Many local health boards have had to to stop compliance checks during the past three years, because of budget cuts.
