President of the University of Massachusetts Jack Wilson>
AMHERST, MA(wfcr) -
In an interview with WFCR Friday, UMASS President Jack Wilson says he wasn't surprised by Thursday's fiery meeting with the Amherst faculty senate. Earlier this week, Wilson announced a restructuring plan that would eliminate the position of chancellor at UMASS Amherst after next year, with Wilson taking over those duties, as well as keeping his own as president. Wilson says news reports exaggerated his plan for the changes as a certainty, instead of an experiment in the next academic year. And, because of that, he says he came to yesterday's meeting expecting people to react strongly.
Wilson says he hopes that now faculty understands that what he's proposing is a trial year to examine the structure of the university, and try out a new model. he says the aim is to see if it strengthens the Amherst campus and the university system as a whole. Wilson refused to respond to media reports that Carol Lombardi, the wife of the current Amherst chancellor John Lombardi, said publicly that her husband was "pushed out" of his position.
