Green River Elementary to Close

(wfcr) - One of Greenfield, Massachusetts' elementary schools will close its doors at the end of the school year. The school committee voted last night to close the Green River Elementary School as a way to cut its nearly $17-million budget. The committee also dropped its plans to seek a Proposition 2 1/2 override, to supplement the school budget. City Council President Tim Tarrell said it appeared no in town was willing willing to support raising property taxes (Part One of Audio).Farrell also says he believes the state should be providing 100 percent of funding for local education. (Part Two of Audio) School committee members say closing Green River will save a quarter million dollars a year. No teaching positions will be cut, but other jobs, including the principal, will be eliminated.
