Episcopal Church to stop heterosexual weddings
(wfcr) - In a recent sermon at Grace Episcopal Church in Amherst, the Reverend Robert Hirschfeld announced that his church would stop performing wedding ceremonies for heterosexual couples, until the Episcopal Church agreed to allow blessings of same-sex unions as well.
The decision comes as the national Episcopal Church is in conflict with the International Anglican Communion over how-- and whether-- it should recognize gay and lesbian relationships. The debate has been
fierce since Gene Robinson, a partnered gay man, was elected bishop of New Hampshire in 2004. And, as Hirschfeld explained to WFCR's Tina Antolini, at an international meeting of bishops in Tanzania last month,
several African bishops issued an ultimatum -- they said that if the American church doesn't withhold from blessing same-sex unions, there will be a split between the Americans and the rest of the church.
