A hundred years ago U.S. scientists imported tons of Australian lady bird beetles which they believed could eradicate another insect that was decimating citrus crops in California. The experiment succeeded, starting the field of "biological control.". UMass Amherst opens the first-ever international conference of the field Sunday. WFCR's Fred Bever sat down with organizer Roy Van Dreische, who says there are many invasive species in this area which are candidates for biological control.
