Freedom Summer 1964
(wfcr) - In 1964, hundreds of American college students descended on Mississippi to challenge that state's brutal segregation policies and to help blacks register to vote and get an education. Western Massachusetts writer Bruce Watson's new book Freedom Summer tells the story of that movement. WFCR's Susan Kaplan recently spoke with Watson, who says organizers knew that bringing white kids from across the country to join the protests would create tension. © Copyright 2021, wfcr
