Benazir Bhutto assassinated
(pri) - "The World" anchor Lisa Mullins speaks with the BBC's Owen Bennett Jones, who has covered Pakistan politics for years, to get the latest information about Benazir Bhutto's assassination today.

Listen to report

The former prime minister was the victim of an attack at a political rally in the city of Rawalpindi. The suicide bomber fired shots at Bhutto, then blew himself up. Bhutto was rushed to a hospital, but doctors there couldn't save her.

Benazir Bhutto's death plunges Pakistan into turmoil, just as the country was getting ready for key elections next month. President Pervez Musharraf has declared three days of mourning. Musharraf also said Bhutto's assassination was the work of terrorists.

The BBC's Owen Bennett Jones says that on this occasion, the bombers did something different -- they waited for Bhutto to leave the rally, then used gunfire as well as suicide bomb in the assassination. He says Islamic militants are the most likely culprit.
