Property Tax Assesment Disputed in Deerfield
(wfcr) - Farmers in Deerfield, Massachusetts will get a chance to address local officials at the town's annual tax classification hearing Wednesday. Farmers who are enrolled in a state program were expecting to have their property taxes based on the income made from crops, but the local board of assessors is taxing the land based on market value, in some cases dramatically increasing property taxes. The state department of revenue approved the local board's figures. Deerfield selectman Carolyn Shores Ness says the town has called on state lawmakers to help rectify the matter, though they say Massachusetts has never retracted a certification of tax rates.

Richard Stellman, chair of Deerfield's board of assessors, says the board based its decision on figures showing that some farm land in the town has been sold for amounts way above recommended values.
