AMHERST, MA(wfcr) -
The search for an interim leader to replace outgoing UMASS, Amherst Chancellor John Lombardi continues. Newspaper reports say former Northeastern University president Richard Freeland and former Trinity College and University of Hawaii president Evan Dobelle are among the candidates being looked to run the Amherst campus while a search committee looks for a permanent Chancellor. Brian O'Connor, the faculty senate delegate to the board of trustees, says he hopes whoever is selected will be able to work closely with the faculty, which has been largely supportive of the outgoing Chancellor.
Dobelle, a UMASS grad who currently heads the New England Board of Higher Education, resigned as president of the University of Hawaii three years ago amid controversy. And it remains unclear whether Freedland would accept the interim position. O'Connor says he would like to see John Dibiaggio, a current trustee and a former UCONN president, as interim Chancellor. But he says state ethics law regarding his trustee position may exclude him from the job.
