Works by Warhol, Johns Power Art Auction
2006 Gretchen Berg
(Associated Press) -

An Andy Warhol painting has sold for more than 71 million dollars at a New York City auction -- that's four times more than the previous top auction price for a Warhol work.

Christie's says "Green Car Crash" was sold last night. It was painted in 1963, part of a series of Warhol works that drew on photographs of fatal accidents.

The auction house says the painting had been in a private collection for decades. The previous auction record for a Warhol work was about 17 million dollars.

Last night's auction of postwar and contemporary art took in nearly 385 million dollars. Christie's says that makes it the second most lucrative art auction ever held.

Several other works set records for their artists, including a Jasper Johns canvas titled "Figure 4," which sold for more than 17 million.
