Shields wins 14th, as Rays beat Orioloes BALTIMORE, MD (wesm) - (AP) James Shields pitched seven effective innings to earn his 14th win, and the Tampa Bay Rays reduced their magic number to win the AL East to three by beating the Baltimore Orioles 5-2 Tuesday night in the first game of a doubleheader.

Any combination of Tampa Bay wins and Boston losses totaling three will give the Rays their first division title. The Red Sox hosted Cleveland later Tuesday night.

The victory extended Tampa Bay's lead over Boston to three games and enabled the Rays to match the 1991 Atlanta Braves for most wins (94) by a team that owned the worst record in the majors one year earlier. © Copyright 2009, wesm
