(wesm) - WMDT Channel 47 is announcing that it will be shutting down its old "analog" signal today - in preparation for the station's full switch to digital transmission.

This comes ahead of the federally mandated switchover to digital for all TV stations across the country, on February 17, 2009.

In a letter to The Daily Times, WMDT General Manager Kathleen McLain, said that by Thursday or Friday, weather permitting, WMDT-47 will have its stronger signal up and running on digital channel 47.

WMDT-47 has been running a reduced-power digital signal on Channel 53 for several years. However, this final digital phase will give WMDT-47 a much increased boost in signal strength.

Ms. McLain says that some Delmarva viewers who watch on cable may experience a few interruptions during this period as equipment is being installed.

However, the improved digital signal, which can be received via antenna to a digital-receiving TV set or via a digital-to-analog converter to an older analog set, will be up and running by Thursday or Friday.

Digital sets and converters are available at many stores, but McLain adds that the Fruitland, Md. Wal-Mart, Circuit City, and Best Buy seem to be the most ready to provide the right equipment and correct answers on what antenna viewers will need.

For more information, viewers can contact WMDT directly by calling 410-742-4747. In addition, coupons for $40 discounts for converters are available by calling 888-DTV-2009, or by clicking for information at WMDT's Web site: http://www.wmdt.com/ .
