Conectiv plant fined $5.3M for emissions
(2008-09-19)
(wesm) - New Jersey's Environmental Protection Department has fined Conectiv Energy $5.3 million for allowing excessive emissions of hydrogen chloride at its Deepwater Generating Station in Salem County.

The plant was given until Oct. 21 to shut down a boiler at the plant next to the Delaware Memorial Bridge.

The state says the emissions can mix with moisture in the air to form hydrochloric acid aerosol, which can irritate the respiratory system.

The DEP says the company ignored orders to fix the problem for months.

The company did not immediately respond to a telephone message and an e-mail seeking comment Friday morning.
