Area golfers joined NFL legend Art Shell and other football greats on Wednesday at the Art Shell Celebrity Golf Classic, held at the Glen Riddle Golf Club in Berlin, Maryland.
Mr. Shell played football for Maryland State College - today known as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore - and was drafted to the Oakland Raiders immediately after graduating in 1968.
He played as offensive tackle for the Raiders from 1968 to 1982 - and became the first African-American head coach in the modern NFL in 1989, when he took the helm of the Oakland franchise.
According to Mr. Shell, the original motivation for creating the Golf Classic was to raise scholarship money for students who wanted to come to the University:

According to Mr. Shell, the original motivation for creating the Golf Classic was to raise scholarship money for students who wanted to come to the University:
Shell: Well the motivation came about when Marshall Cropper, who spearheads it right now. And back then we had about four guys get together, and [we] wanted to do something on campus. We first started off with the Youth Football Camp. And then Marshall said Well, we can do a little bit more - we can do a golf tournament. Let's have a celebrity golf tournament.'However, Mr. Shell adds that he also wants area golfers to enjoy themselves while playing and mingling with other NFL celebrities:
Shell: I was against it at first, and he told me he'd been to quite a few and he knew exactly how to go about putting it on. And I said, OK let's do it.' And again the idea was to try to create some funds for a scholarship for the kids here at the University - so we can give them a chance to experience the college life in a fruitful way.
Shell: And so Marshall has been spearheading this thing for all these years. Now, it's been a long time, and it seems like every year we do it, it gets better and better.
Shell: Well at this particular point in time, we want them to have a good time, because they've already spent the money to be involved in the Golf Tournament. So we want to make sure we present a great presentation as far as the University's concerned - and as far as what Marshall and all the volunteers [are concerned].For more information on the Art Shell Celebrity Golf Classic, and the latest on the events taking place during the remainder of the UMES Founder's Week, you can visit http://www.umes.edu/ .
Shell: This is a volunteer unit. Volunteers have put this thing together, and make it work. And then the celebrities that are able to come, come in [of their] free time. I mean, they don't get paid, they just come in of their own free will, to join in and help out - because they think it's a worthy cause.
Shell: But the back, and the front end of it, and the middle of it, is to raise funds for scholarships for these kids here at the University. And whatever we can do, we've always done that - whatever we can do to help the University, help these kids out - that's what it's all about, because they're the future.
