New Indian River bridge design unveiled
(2008-09-18)
(wesm) - (AP) The Delaware Department of Transportation has unveiled the revised design for the new Indian River Inlet Bridge.

The span will be one-half mile long and will cost $150 million dollars. Preliminary work is already under way, with the heavy construction work scheduled to begin next year.

The bridge is expected to open in mid-2011.

It's the second design for the replacement bridge. The first project had to be scrapped when soil at the new bridge site was not settling the way the engineering firm had predicted. Officials say the existing bridge is still safe, but the new bridge will alleviate the possible problems found in the first design.
