Show Number: 84
Guest: Vincent DeMarco, President - Maryland Healthcare for All
Subject(s): The Healthcare Reform Debate (Pt. 3)
Original Airdate: Monday, October 5, 2009
Running Time: 29:00
Brief Synopsis:
Over the years, Vincent DeMarco has built a reputation in Annapolis as one of the biggest crusaders for public health initiatives in Maryland. His tenacity in building coalitions and persuading state lawmakers to adopt measures such as a tobacco tax increase that passed several years ago, as well as gun control laws, has led at least one Delegate in the General Assembly to call him the "master of grassroots organization in Maryland."
And now Mr. DeMarco has turned his attention to the issue of healthcare reform. He's President of the "Maryland Citizens' Health Initiative" - also known as "Maryland Healthcare for All." His Baltimore-based group represents a statewide coalition of unions, businesses, church groups, and other non-profit organizations.
His group is advocating for affordable healthcare access for the estimated 50 million Americans that are currently without health coverage, through the creation of an independent, quasi-governmental health insurance pool that would be accountable to its enrollees, providers and the general public.
But the debate over comprehensive healthcare reform has become politically-heated, with some in favor of these types of "public options" - and others very much opposed to the idea.
We'll talk about all of that and more with Mr. Vinny DeMarco in this discussion, which was recorded on September 17, 2009.
