Brief Synopsis:
On July 23, 2009, Salisbury University hosted a concert by the Tianjin Song and Dance Theatre -- who performed to the delight of children and adults of ages.
This extraordinary traveling group of Chinese musicians and dancers have traversed the globe performing a fusion of traditional Chinese folk music - with a modern pop sensibility. It's part of China's efforts to deepen its friendships with other countries, through cultural understanding.
Based in the city of Tianjin, China, this traveling company is part of China's prestigious Tianjin Dance Drama and Opera House. The organization's traveling troupe has performed in over 50 nations, including a number of famous venues around the world - such Sydney's Opera House in Australia, and Vienna's Golden Hall.
During their performances, each musician plays on traditional Chinese folk instruments, such as the erhu while wearing traditional dress.
Over the next half-hour, we're going to talk with some of the participants and performers who attended the concert.
I'd like to thank Dr. Hong Yao of Salisbury University, for assisting with translation. And a special note of thanks to June Krell-Salgado for helping to arrange the interviews in this program.
