(wesm) - (AP) Maryland Natural Resources Police say three people were rescued from the Chesapeake Bay after the wake from a passing freighter came over their boat's stern, causing it to capsize.

An off-duty Natural Resources officer driving on the bay bridge spotted the people clinging to coolers in the water around 8 p.m.

Saturday. Police say five people in a 20-foot powerboat were fishing near the bridge about one mile from Kent Island when it capsized.

One of the people was not wearing a life jacket, so police say two people with jackets stayed with the one without using the coolers to stay afloat, while the other two swam to shore.
