Candlelight vigil for UMES student killed in accident
(2009-05-12)
(wesm) - The Daily Times reports that a candlelight vigil is scheduled tonight in memory of a UMES student who was killed early Sunday in a traffic accident in town.

The tribute to 22-year-old Antwan Robert Johnson, of Washington, will be held at 6 p.m. in the Rotunda of the Student Services Center. The event is being organized by the Student Government Association.

Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene by Princess Anne paramedics after a vehicle in which he was a passenger collided with another car and rolled over on Hytche Boulevard at 1:36 a.m. - that according to Princess Anne Police Chief Scott Keller.

Johnson, who was not wearing a seat belt, was riding in the back seat of a Toyota 4 Runner driven by 19-year-old Jamal Donnell Bryant, of Capitol Heights, Md., when the collision took place.

Bryant and another passenger were not seriously injured, Keller said.
Police are still trying to determine if there were any other passengers in the 4 Runner, he said.

The 4 Runner was northbound on Beechwood Street when it collided with a Chevrolet Cavalier that was headed west on Hytche Boulevard.

The other occupants of both vehicles -- all of whom were UMES students -- were treated for non-life-threatening injuries, Keller said.

No charges have been filed so far because the accident is still under investigation, he said.
