9:00AM - 12:30PM Given the variety of music this morning on WEMU, we are one spicy station! For his birthday, we found two lesser-heard Django Reinhardt gypsy jazz tunes: "Swing Guitars" and "Sweet Chorus" which was covered by the Hot Club of Detroit. We made sure to get more Detroit representation in the mix from the new CD by Scott Gwinnell to guitarist Kenny Burrell to a gem from the early years of the all-woman Detroit ensemble, Straight Ahead. We celebrated vibraphonist Gary Burton's birthday with one his finest recent recordings and an early example of his work with the legendary saxophonist Stan Getz. For composer/arranger Marty Paich's birthday, we showcased his magnificent arrangement of "Fascinating Rhythm" for Mel Torme. As usual, the classics were balanced with fresh new music. We premiered "A Wonderful Thing" by Chicago-based pianist Rob Ryndak and the compelling new blues-drenched CD, "'Till Your River Runs Dry" by Eric Burdon. Latin and world sounds from Aguanko and Cesaria Evora added the proper exotic touch while the request for "Ypsilanti" by Rampage Swing added a little levity and fun.
