If we are the sum of our experiences then two recent musical experiences have shaped my world, thus yours. Both experiences centered around regional talent. We needed go no farther than Ann Arbor, Michigan to hear world-class musicians. Alberto Nacif's new Latin jazz band Aguanko at Kerrytown Concert House last Friday, was warm, charming and stimulating. Last night's Detroit music revue "From The Cass Corridor To The World" was revealing, reverent and relevant. I could not help but reflect on these two shows and share my enthusiasm with you this morning. James Carter, Marcus Belgrave, Geri Allen, Joan Belgrave, Gerard Gibbs and all the rest were spectacular. Congratulations to UMS for an incredible evening. Along with reviewing recent performances, I made sure to premiere two excellent brand new CDs: "Bringing It Back Home" by guitarist and singer Robben Ford and "Carmen's Mambo" by Lary Barilleau & The Latin Jazz Collective. I also dug in to the WEMU vaults for classics by trombonists Jay Jay Johnson and Juan Tizol (with the Duke Ellington Orchestra) for their birthdays. I remembered to play a little Sam Cooke for his birthday as well. I hope you enjoyed the music mix and felt the warm inspiration on this very cold Tuesday morning. Thank you for listening!
