Investment Losses
(2008-08-27)
(WEKU) - Kentucky lawmakers studying state pension systems want to know how much money the systems have lost from bad investments in recent years.

Six years ago, when the telecommunications giant WorldCom went bankrupt in the wake of an accounting scandal, Kentucky Retirement Systems lost around 12-million dollars. The systems eventually got five million back through a federal class-action lawsuit. General counsel Eric Wampler says KRS has been involved in about 175 recovery efforts.

"The recoveries ranged from the high of five million dollars, down to a low of, I think, two-dollars-35-cents on one case."

He says the total amount of recoveries from investments that went sour is around 13-million dollars. But he was not prepared to tell lawmakers how much money the retirement systems have lost. He promised to provide that information at a later date.
