Convention Underway
(2008-08-25)
(WEKU) - The 2008 Democratic National Convention is now underway in Denver and heading the Kentucky delegation is Governor Steve Beshear.

Governor Beshear last attended a national party convention in 1984, when he was lieutenant governor. The Democratic nominee that year was Walter Mondale who went on to lose to President Ronald Reagan. Beshear says Democrats must emerge unified from this year's convention.

"Obviously, a lot of the Clinton supporters are disappointed that their candidate didn't get the nomination. But I think in the long run, they want change like everybody else in this country, and they know that Senator Obama represents that opportunity for change and certainly the other side doesn't," Beshear said.

The Kentucky delegation includes 60 delegates and nine alternates. They will help nominate Illinois Senator Barack Obama on Wednesday. Obama will give his acceptance speech as the Democratic presidential nominee on Thursday.
