The new sustainability coordinator at the University of Kentucky believes the start up of a storm water management fee could help bolster environmental efforts on campus.
Shane Tedder says the idea is to view economic vitality as an equal player with social justice and environmental stewardship. Tedder says a January effective date for the city's new storm water fee offers an incentive to look at new green' strategies.
"Previous parking lots so the rain water percolates through the pavement instead of running off of it to green roofs so the roof system itself captures mitigates the rain water run off to rain gardens and rain barrels," Tedder said.
Building new parking lots and replacing roofs may be longer term initiatives since they carry a capital cost. Tedder says the first priority may be to go after 'wasted kilowatts hours.' He says cumulative savings could come with every university employee turning off a light for an hour a day.
