Performing Arts Study Released

A national project called the Performing Arts Research Coalition has released a survey on public attitudes toward the performing arts in the Cincinnati area. The study finds that three out of five Greater Cincinnati residents attended a live, professional performing arts presentation during the year preceding the survey. It finds that the audience for performing arts includes all age groups, not primarily those over 55. An overwhelming majority of people in our area agrees that the performing arts add strong community value; and most say the performing arts add value to their individual lives.

In general, those who attend such events say they're more active in all aspects of community life. Respondents did not cite any one overwhelming reason that would prevent them from attending a performing arts event. But 42% say it's hard from them to make time to go out. Only 13 % say they would avoid an arts event because they don't know its location or because of safety concerns.

The Washington D.C.-based Urban Institute conducted the household survey. Cincinnati is one of only 10 communities in the U.S. selected to take part in the Performing Arts Research Coalition, which commissioned the study. Local organizations participating include, among others, the Cincinnati Opera, the Cincinnati Arts Association, the Cincinnati Ballet and the Playhouse in the Park.
