EKU Saves on Energy Costs
In 2008, Eastern Kentucky University and Siemens Building Techologies agreed on a contract to greatly reduce the school's utility costs and reduce the impact on the environment. Company and university officials say the project is paying off.
Under the 27 million dollar agreement Siemens guaranteed to reduce the university's annual utility bills by more than 40%. After upgrading and retrofitting dozens of campus buildings over the past 14 months, EKU officials say that's happening. And the benefit is more than monetary. Siemens spokesman Dan Crowley says improvements pay off in the classroom.
"The classrooms themselves are brighter, higher foot candles, they can see better, the classrooms are comfortable, not too hot, not too cold, it's just a great learning environment," Crowley said.
The reductions in energy consumption come from energy efficient lighting and motors, improvements in heating and air conditioning systems, ventilation and water conservation.
