Lexington Fire Marshal Inspects Problematic Housing
Lexington's Fire Marshal says progress is being made to address safety issues in student housing near the University of Kentucky.
Jim Branham's staff members have contacted owners from about half of the original 45 homes surveyed. He says the majority of safety issues are related to smoke detectors, interior locks, and the height of windows. Once these homes pass the inspection, the fire marshal anticipates moving on to other homes near the university and beyond.
"I anticipate we'll try to move through the whole UK area. We consider the downtown UK area where a lot of the issues are right now and we'll branch out from there I assume," Branham said.
Branham says the entire process could take a year to complete. So far, he says no citations have been issued.
