Lexington Prepares for Winter Weather
(2009-11-06)
(Kentucky Public Radio) -

Lexington leaders have been briefed on this winter's snow removal plans. Last winter, Lexington residents endured their second major ice storm in six years. It may not have packed the same punch as 2003, but, last winter's storm left many homes without power for days. There've been changes this year.

In response, Public Works Administrator Kevin Wente says Lexington will clear more roadways this winter.

"I'm not sure of the total lane mileage that we've increased, but we have with the requests of council, especially as a result of the ice storm last February we have made changes just improving our routing throughout the city," Wente said.

Wente says some 1,600 miles of Lexington roads are typically treated in any given snow event. Streets and roads department director Sam Williams added there should be plenty of road salt stockpiled to satisfy Lexington's needs this winter.
