Lexington Officials Address Addresses
(2009-11-03)
(WEKU) -

An estimated 24% of Lexington's businesses and residences don't have properly posted addresses and cannot be identified from the street. City officials are working to correct the problem.

Enhanced 911 director David Lucas estimates about 40,000 houses, commercial establishments and apartment buildings don't have their addresses posted outside. Lucas says a properly posted address is vital when ambulance drivers, police officers, and fire fighters respond to an emergency. Lucas says 70% of the structures without easily visible addresses house some sort of business.

"Older areas or places that haven't been renovated they almost like hide their numbers from you they'll tell you how much beer is or how much the big mac is but they don't have their numbers up anywhere so we want to address those," Lucas said.

The figures are based on a survey of three neighborhoods in the Lexington-area. Since most GPS navigational devices require an address, Lucas says we are again becoming an address-based society. Council members may revise Lexington's address ordinance. One change might require larger numbers on some businesses.
