The President of the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education would like to see regional universities consider a more focused academic emphasis.

Bob King says he has begun talking with campus presidents about the concept. For example, King says a comprehensive university might become home to an institute on the training and preparation of teachers or be the Arts' campus. The CPE President says it would be up to administrators at each campus to decide if they want this kind of focus and, if so, what they need to make it work.

"What's the makeup of the faculty, what's the larger interest of the campus and what works in the region that the campus serves," King said.

King would also like to see an increase in associate degrees through the Kentucky community and technical college system. King and State Education Commissioner Terry Holliday participated in the fall meeting of the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence.
