High Stakes, Low Attendance
(2009-11-02)
(WEKU) -

Keeneland's fall racing meet was unusually cold. Chilly weather decreased overall track attendance by almost 20% from last year. Keeneland saw about 11,000 track visitors daily.

Despite poor attendance, spokesman Jim Williams says the fall season saw an increase in wagers. That's because, according to Williams, gambling is increasing at off-track locations.

"There are a number of locations, and now only about 80% of your money is handled on track or less than that, so people are betting on you throughout the country," Williams said.

Betting this fall totaled more than 119 million dollars which is up 9% from 109.5 million dollars last year. Keeneland begins spring racing in April.
