East Kentucky Power Opposes Smith Plant
(2009-10-29)
(WEKU) -

East Kentucky Power Cooperative utility members and non-profit organizations are asking the state Public Service Commission to revoke approval of the proposed Smith coal-burning power plant in Clark County.

They presented their case Thursday in a telephone press conference. The state Public Service Commission approved the plan in 2006 and renewed it in 2007. But Kentucky Environmental Foundation Director Elizabeth Crowe says the anticipated customer demand never materialized.

"It is now 2009, the energy landscape has changed dramatically and it's clear the Smith power plant is not in the best interest of EKPC's members," Crowe said.

Crowe says the utility's customer base has not grown and economic conditions have actually decreased demand.

PSC spokesman Andrew Melnykovych says the power company will have ten days to respond to the complaint. The PSC will then evaluate EKPC's response and decide how to go forward.
