Michigan Congressman Praises Health Care Legislation
(2009-10-29)
(Michigan Radio) - House Democrats in Washington have unveiled legislation to extend health care coverage to millions of Americans.

The linchpin of the legislation would be a new government-regulated insurance exchange where private companies would sell policies in competition with the government.

Michigan Congressman Sander Levin says the legislation would lower health costs and expand access to care:

"We're covering the vast majority of the 45 million; that's the estimate who have no insurance," Levin says. "Not everyone, but it's a major, major first step toward universal coverage."

Levin says there's a requirement for businesses, except for smaller businesses, to cover employees, with help through subsidization.

In Michigan, 11 percent of the state's residents are uninsured.

Levin says people who already have coverage, are happy with it, will be allowed to keep it.
