UK Pushes for Tobacco Ban on the Streets
(2009-10-27)
(WEKU) -

The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council wants more study into the University of Kentucky's tobacco free policy. UK wanted final approval Tuesday of a memorandum of understanding with the city. UK wanted Lexington authorities to enforce the school's tobacco ban on city roads that pass through campus.

Instead, the council decided sent the proposal to its Intergovernmental committee. Council member Diane Lawless says some of UK's neighbors worry smokers will migrate onto their property.

"I think I've had one or two that are for it and lots and lots that are against it," Lawless said.

Nevertheless, UK Vice President Frank Butler says the school will still go tobacco free on November 19th.

"We'll just continue to work with the city on this to see what other accommodations we can make, but we'll be going ahead regardless," Butler said.

Butler says UK will file a similar request with Kentucky's transportation department for state roads like Rose Street and Euclid. The UK administrator says he has no idea how the state will react to the request.
