Less Time for Legislation
(2009-10-27)
(WEKU) -

When they took control of Congress, Democratic leaders signaled longer workweeks were coming. But, now they spend just three days a week in Washington DC. That gives lawmakers more time in Kentucky, but means less time to work on issues like health care reform.

Republican Congressman Ed Whitfield argues the Democrats have been slacking because they lack a strong agenda. They haven't been able to pass major bills like health care and climate change.

"It appears to me that they are just kind of manufacturing minor legislation to bring on the floor to just keep us here to say we are working hard," Whitfield said.

When lawmakers are home they spend a lot of time with voters and fund raising. Republican Harold Rogers says their work in Washington is much different - and they need more days to do it.

"You got to be here to vote or debate and go to committee. I enjoy being home don't get me wrong, and I do my chores at home, but the public pays us to do our work here. If we aren't here to do it, then I don't think we are deserving," Rogers said.

Democratic House leaders have blamed the Senate for holding up legislation. Lawmakers get criticized for wasting taxpayer dollars when they don't produce bills.
