Lexington Council Dismisses Penn State Plan
A committee of the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council has voted to take a density requirement' off the table. The council is responding to complaints over student housing near the University of Kentucky.
One proposed solution to loud parties, poor parking, and litter is a limit on the number of students living in a residence. However, the proposal, which is called the Penn State plan, was rejected by Lexington's planning committee. Council member Cheryl Fiegel worries it would simply shift the problem to other neighborhoods.
"Rather than try and reduce density in the area, I think what we have to do is fix the problem and control the behavior and try to do things to improve the enforcement," Fiegel said.
Council member Tom Blues wanted more discussion on another element of the Penn State plan where city government would buy back vacant homes in neighborhoods with heavy concentrations of student housing.
The committee will meet in late November to continue its review of recommendations made by a city-appointed student housing task force.
