UK Researches Health Benefits of Chocolate
(2009-10-23)
(WEKU) -

Scientific work by a student in the University of Kentucky's medical research program may be good news for candy lovers. Research has uncovered another potential benefit of chocolate.

As part of the 12th Cardiovascular Research Day at UK, Candice Thomas participated in the poster presentations. She's studying fatty acids and how they impact the heart in type two diabetics. Thomas says saturated fats usually have a bad reputation.

"I'm actually seeing some protective effects with this fat which is sort of paradoxical, the good thing about that is that fat is found in cocoa butter and we consumer large quantities of chocolate so that's kind of exciting news for some of us I suppose," Thomas said.

Thomas couldn't go as far as to say diabetics should eat chocolate. She says it's only preliminary data. Cardiovascular Research Center director Alan Daugherty says the annual event raises awareness about research across the UK campus.
